A great deal of progress has been made in discovering the process that causes breast cancer. While it may be decades or centuries before all the processes are known and proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, at this point I think we have enough information to prevent most breast cancer - about 90% of it[1].
We have been waiting for 40 years for a cure or even real progress in treatment - there is none. We are still using therapies that are about a hundred years old and as ineffective now as then.
It seems that one type of estrogen is a promoter of breast cancer and another is a protector. This ratio can be measured and risk accessed. More importantly the good estrogen, 2-Hydroxyesterone (2-OHE) is easily promoted, as is the suppression of the bad estrogen, 16-Alpha-Hydroxyestrone (16-OHE).
Now we don’t have proof positive that 90% of all breast cancers can be prevented, but the supplements and life style changes to do so are modest. Since there is no cure or even one on the horizon, it makes sense to use the information we have to try and prevent most of it.
Numerous human studies have shown that:
· Selenium has been shown to reduce the over all cancer death rate by 50 %.
· Vitamin D has shown to prevent as much as 77% of most cancers.
· Cruciferous vegetables with DIM or IC3 suppresses 16-OHE with significant reductions.
· Soy and vegetables verses a western diet of meats and bad fats reduce estrogen positive breast cancer by 90%.
· D-Glucarate, a vegetable derivate, has reduced breast cancer by up to 70 %.
· Lignans offer a 44% chance of reducing breast cancer.
· Women with high levels of Omega 3 fats have a 60% lower risk.
Additionally it has been found that it is important to avoid red meats, a lot of high fat dairy, sweets, obesity, abortions, antiperspirants, excessive bra use, and, of course, bad fats like hydrogenated oils.
